Karwa Chauth is celebrated during Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in the Hindu month of Kartik and according to Amanta calendar. This festival is celebrated by the married women for the long life of their husband. The festival majorly popular in northern part of India earlier but now due to influence of media and TV, now it is celebrated all over India.

However, these days now girls who are engaged or having boyfreind are also celebrating it in a big way.

The process of celebrating is very tough as women or girls need to do fasting (don’t eat or drink) till they perform poojan (Married women worship Lord Shiva and His family including Lord Ganesha) at night followed by the seeing moon. Women end their fasting by drinking water through the husbands hand.

A woman seeks blessings from the supreme powers to bless her as she observes a nirjal vrat (fating without even drinking water) until she offers her prayers to the moon god in the evening.

Before the moon sighting, a community ceremony is held for married women. Women adorn beautiful red sarees or lehengas and sit in a circle with their puja thalis.

Stories of karva chauth are narrated and various songs are sung. Thereafter, women pray to the clay idols of goddess Parvati to bless their husbands and family.
